Lee Johnson

Having represented Scotland at U18 level, Lee qualified as a PGA professional in 1976 and held the position of Head Club professional at Powfoot GC, Dumfriesshire (’77 – ’87) and Burhill GC, Surrey (’87 – ’04).

Teaching was his passion, and having been Head coach to Surrey Juniors for 17 years he took the opportunity to set up his own Academy at the Drift GC in Surrey in 2004.

Shortly after, Lee was awarded ‘Fellow’ status by the Professional Golfer’s Association for his work as a PGA professional, and in particular his success as a coach to golfers of all levels, from juniors to Tour players.

Teaching Philosophy

Fundamentals

Good swings are based on a sound set up and solid swing fundamentals.

Simplicity

The best swings are unhurried and uncomplicated.

Development

Good teaching is about player development, not quick fixes

Guidance

Golfers need explanation and
guidance, not just instruction.

Enjoyment

Lessons should be enjoyable
as well as informative.

Understanding

Pupils should leave each session with a clear idea of how and what to practice.

Targets

Whether your goal is shot specific or results driven, it is important to set yourself targets with an achievable timescale.

Practice

Tuition + drills + practice is the fastest route to better golf.

Success

The success of Lee’s pupils is what drives his teaching.

“From a handicap cut to a tournament win, all improvement is success and making people feel good about their golf is what makes my work so rewarding”.

Guiding the Surrey boys team to their first ever success in the England County U18 Team Championship in 2000 is just one of Lee’s many teaching achievements, but he is perhaps best known for his coaching of several juniors who went on to become successful Tour players, including Paul Casey, Anthony Wall and Ross McGowan to name but three.

His extensive work with double European Tour winner Gary Orr, both in coaching and management is well documented and Lee has enjoyed multiple wins by his pupils on the European Tour, Asian Tour and European Legends Tour.

New Pupils

Assessment of an unfamiliar swing should not be hurried and Lee requires at least an hour with every new pupil.

He will go through a series of checks to fully assess their current game before making any required changes and prescribing practice drills and swing improvement routines.

Lee Johnson Golf Playing Lessons

Playing Lessons

Many pupils behave differently on the course to the way they do on the range, and the huge variation of ground conditions and challenges help Lee fully understand his pupil’s needs.

He accompanies golfers over 5 or 9 holes observing how they deal with the shot challenges the course poses, whilst working on the vital skills of pre shot routines, focus and course management.

Lee Johson Golf Group Classes

Group Classes

Group classes can be organised for up to six golfers at a time and are available upon request.

They are particularly good for short game coaching when Lee can cover the key skills of putting, green reading, chipping and bunker play.

Lee Johson Golf Junior Coaching

Junior Coaching

Juniors are the future of the game and 1 to 1 lessons give them the opportunity to draw on Lee’s vast experience as a successful junior coach.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the coaching sessions so that future practice can be monitored.
